ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 3 -- United States Patent no. 12,538,940, issued on Feb. 3, was assigned to U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. LLC (Richmond, Va.).

"Tobacco having reduced tobacco specific nitrosamine content" was invented by John R. Chipley (Brentwood, Tenn.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present document generally relates to methods and materials involved in producing tobacco or smokeless tobacco product comprising chlorate. For example, chlorate can be used to reduce tobacco specific nitrosamine content in tobacco or smokeless tobacco products."

The patent was filed on Dec. 9, 2022, under Application No. 18/078,331.
