US Patent Issued to The Broad Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Aug. 4 for "Type VI CRISPR orthologs and systems" (Massachusetts Inventors)

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 5 -- United States Patent no. 12,698,491, issued on Aug. 4, was assigned to The Broad Institute Inc. (Cambridge, Mass.) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Mass.).

"Type VI CRISPR orthologs and systems" was invented by Feng Zhang (Cambridge, Mass.) and David Benjamin Turitz Cox (Cambridge, Mass.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The invention provides for systems, methods, and compositions for targeting nucleic acids. In particular, the invention provides non-naturally occurring or engineered RNA-targeting systems comprising a novel RNA-targeting CRISPR effector protein and at least one targeting nucleic acid component like a guide RNA."
