ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 16 -- United States Patent no. 12,359,253, issued on July 15, was assigned to The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University (Stanford, Calif.).

"Method of in situ gene sequencing" was invented by Xiao Wang (Stanford, Calif.), William E. Allen (Albany, Calif.) and Karl A. Deisseroth (Stanford, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Provided herein are devices, methods, and systems for in situ gene sequencing of a target nucleic acid in a cell in an intact tissue. Methods of screening a candidate agent to determine whether the candidate agent modulates gene expression of a nucleic acid in a cell in an intact tissue are also provided herein."
