ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 5 -- United States Patent no. 12,616,225, issued on May 5, was assigned to SOCIETE DES PRODUITS NESTLE S.A. (Vevey, Switzerland).

"Petfood composition and process for preparation thereof" was invented by Isabel Fernandez Farres (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Paulo Alexandre Braga Fernandes (Amiens, France).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention relates to a process for making a pet food composition comprising a red seaweed as a natural gelling agent with enhanced palatability. The compositions of the invention can be devoid of commonly used, chemically treated gelling agents such as carrageenan, alginate, agar, gellan gum."
