ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 17 -- United States Patent no. 12,581,957, issued on March 17, was assigned to Raytheon Co. (Waltham, Mass.).

"Anti-counterfeiting fingerprint" was invented by Patrick M. Sain (Torrance, Calif.) and William Paul Posey (Inlet Beach, Fla.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A physically unclonable function (PUF) device includes capacitor array couple to an electronic device. The capacitor array includes a plurality of parallel conductive elements coupled to a dielectric material having a spatially varying permittivity to define array of randomly valued capacitors."

The patent was filed on April 19, 2021, under Application No. 17/234,402.
