ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 21 -- United States Patent no. 12,686,263, issued on July 21, was assigned to Magna Exteriors Inc. (Aurora, Canada).

"On-board diagnostic mechanism for active grille shutter system" was invented by Paul N. Woodson (Detroit) and Jeffrey B. Manhire (Rochester, Mich.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An active grill shutter assembly incorporating at least one locking mechanism in the case where a vane component is missing to improve the ability of an actuator to sense damage within the active aerodynamic system. This functionality may be achieved by including these features within the frame as an integral component, or it may be added as a separate component."
