ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 21 -- United States Patent no. 12,605,278, issued on April 21, was assigned to Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision Inc. (Irvine, Calif.).

"Phacoemulsification tip type detection" was invented by Vadim Gliner (Haifa, Israel), Adam Walter Toner (Ladera Ranch, Calif.), Assaf Govari (Haifa, Israel) and Andres Claudio Altmann (Haifa, Israel).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Systems and methods are provided for detecting the actual tip or tip type being used on a handpiece of an ophthalmic instrument. By detecting the tip type being used, the correct system settings can be used during the surgical procedure, and the surgical system may operate safely."
