ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 23 -- United States Patent no. 12,506,395, issued on Dec. 23, was assigned to Hinetics LLC (Champaign, Ill.).
"Superconducting motor with spoke-supported rotor windings" was invented by Jianqiao Xiao (Champaign, Ill.) and Kiruba S. Haran (Champaign, Ill.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A lightweight superconducting machine suitable for aerospace applications provides a wound-field rotor suspended from a driveshaft by insulating tensile spokes. The resultant reduction in heat transmission allows a cryocooler positioned centrally within the rotor to cool the machine coils through radially conducting straps."
