According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A filtration system and method for removing sub-micron particulates and contaminants from a fluid flow with the use of ultralow density metal and coated metal foams that have nanometer to micron scale pores that can trap fluid borne particulates.
