ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 17 -- United States Patent no. 12,576,181, issued on March 17, was assigned to BAXTER INTERNATIONAL INC. (Deerfield, Ill.) and BAXTER HEALTHCARE SA (Glattpark, Switzerland).

"Hemostatic sponge" was invented by Joris Hoefinghoff (Vienna) and Hans Christian Hedrich (Vienna).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention provides a hemostatic porous sponge comprising a matrix of a fibrous biomaterial and particles of a fluid absorbing, particulate material adhered to said matrix material, a method of producing these sponges and their use for wound healing."

The patent was filed on Aug. 22, 2019, under Application No. 16/548,402.
