ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 31 -- United States Patent no. 12,590,049, issued on March 31, was assigned to Arizona Board of Regents on Behalf of the University of Arizona (Tucson, Ariz.).
"Metal-free oxidation of pyrenes" was invented by Dominic V. McGrath (Tucson, Ariz.) and Tarek H. El Assaad (Tucson, Ariz.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention provides a method for oxidizing pyrenes without any metal-mediated catalyst or reagent. In particular, the present invention provides a method for selectively oxidizing the K-region of pyrenes using a meta-free oxidizing agent to produce a pyrene 4,5-dione and/or a pyrene 4,5,9,10-tetraone compounds."
