ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 17 -- United States Patent no. 12,577,112, issued on March 17, was assigned to Arizona Board of Regents on behalf of Arizona State University (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

"Carbon fiber materials from waste polyethylene and polyethylene oil" was invented by Elham Fini (Phoenix) and Albert Hung (Tempe, Ariz.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "In one aspect, manufacturing carbon fiber materials includes combining waste plastic with waste polyethylene oil to yield infused waste plastic, combining the infused waste plastic with sulfuric acid to yield a mixture, irradiating the mixture with microwave radiation to yield sulfonated waste plastic, and carbonizing the sulfonated waste plasti...
