ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 12 -- United States Patent no. 12,625,817, issued on May 12, was assigned to Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (Santa Clara, Calif.).

"Cost-driven prefetching" was invented by Uday Kumar Reddy Vengalam (Hamden, Conn.) and John Kalamatianos (Arlington, Mass.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Systems and techniques for cost-based prefetching are described. In one example, a processor includes a cache system having a hierarchy of one or more cache levels and an instruction prefetcher associated with a cache level of the cache system.
