"Diffractive multifocal small aperture ophthalmic lens" was invented by Valdemar Portney (Newport Coast, Calif.) and F. Richard Christ (Laguna Beach, Calif.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A transmissive ophthalmic lens has a first surface opposite a second surface. The first surface includes a centrally disposed diffractive multifocal zone surrounded by a peripherally disposed refractive non-multifocal zone.
