ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 24 -- United States Patent no. 12,586,976, issued on March 24.

"Tunable microchip laser and laser system for ranging applications" was invented by Thomas James Kane (Menlo Park, Calif.) and John Lawrence Nightingale (Portola Valley, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A frequency modulated, continuous wave (FMCW) laser using a microchip gain medium, an optical coupling element, and a tuning element is described. The laser may be part of a coherent laser ranging system."

The patent was filed on May 15, 2022, under Application No. 17/744,705.
