"Beverage filter" was invented by Pieter Oloff De Wet (Vryheid, South Africa).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A beverage filter for insertion into a container is provided. The filter includes a base with a plurality of holes configured to let liquid pass through it while retaining solids. A wall extends from the base, wherein the wall is configured to allow at least a portion thereof to form a perimeter seal against an internal wall of the container. In operation a low pressure zone is created which pulls liquid through the holes of the base during removal of the beverage filter from the container."
