"Controlled squat strength-training machine" was invented by Ernest Michael Mattox (Holt, Mo.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A controlled squat strength-training machine includes a frame with a base mounting forward, intermediate, and rear uprights. The intermediate upright is pivotally connected to the base and is configured for limited rotation fore-and-aft. Knee pads are provided for restraining of users' knees. Users can adjust the resistance of the machine and thereby vary the exercises performed thereon."
