NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION ISSUES NOTICE: DUKE ENERGY CAROLINAS, LLC; MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2; EXEMPTION

WASHINGTON, March 18 -- Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued a notice called: Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC; McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2; Exemption.

The notice was published in the Federal Register on March 18 by Lee Klos, Project Manager, Plant Licensing Branch II-1, Division of Operating Reactor Licensing, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation.

Summary: The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is issuing an exemption in response to a request dated August 18, 2025, from Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC, to allow the use of AXIOM(R) fuel cladding at McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2. Current NRC regulations limit applicability to the use of fuel rod cladding with zircaloy or ZIRLO TM.
