ORONO, Maine, Aug. 21 -- University of Maine issued the following news release:
Jean MacRae, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Maine, spoke with The Maine Monitor for an article titled "Maine struggling to get homeowners to test and treat private wells for arsenic." Most private wells in Maine are bedrock wells, which are drilled an average of 250 feet deep to access pockets of groundwater contained in the rock's fractures. MacRae said much of the bedrock in Maine contains minerals that house arsenic and radon, the byproduct of decaying uranium.
