CARSON CITY, Nev., Sept. 14 -- Western Nevada College issued the following news release:

The Moon is nearly 240,000 miles away, but on Saturday, Sept. 19, Northern Nevada residents will have an opportunity to take a much closer look.

Western Nevada College's Jack C. Davis Observatory (JCDO) will join people around the world in celebrating NASA's International Observe the Moon Night, an annual free event highlighting lunar observation, science and exploration.

For those attending the 6:30 p.m. event, the Moon will be more than a bright object in the night sky. Through the observatory's telescopes, visitors will be able to explore lunar craters, mountain ridges and other features that are difficult to appreciate with the naked eye.
