ORONO, Maine, July 20 -- University of Maine issued the following news release:
People from nearly every step of the food chain - farmers, processors, restaurateurs and consumers - can help stop the spread of the parasite that has caused a food poisoning outbreak in five states.
Cyclospora, which has not yet been detected in Maine, is a microscopic parasite that can infect people when they consume food or water contaminated through human fecal matter. The parasite causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness that can cause watery diarrhea, explosive bowel movements, fatigue, fever and other symptoms.
