Brief Summary: Severe burn injury frequently requires prolonged mechanical ventilation because of inhalation injury, respiratory failure, systemic inflammation, and repeated surgical procedures. Patients with extensive burns are at high risk of ventilator-associated complications, prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and death.
