ORONO, Maine, Aug. 28 -- University of Maine issued the following news release:
The Associated Press featured the University of Maine Pelagic Fisheries Lab following the capture of a 1,260-pound Atlantic blue marlin off the coast of Massachusetts, believed to be the largest of its kind ever caught off the U.S. East Coast. Walt Golet, director of the lab and an associate professor of marine sciences, explained that the blue marlin are seasonal visitors to the Northeast because the region's waters are too cold for them during much of the year. The marlin's head was sent to the UMaine lab to determine the fish's age, which Golet estimated could be between 25 and 30 years old.
