New York, Sept. 12 -- Alexander Zverev ended Karen Khachanov's challenge in straight sets to storm into the US Open men's singles final, keeping alive his bid for a maiden Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
The top-seeded German produced a composed display to overcome the 30-year-old Russian 6-3, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) in a tense semifinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Zverev made the decisive move late in the opening set. With neither player able to create a break-point opportunity in the early stages, the German stepped up the pressure at 4-3. Khachanov double-faulted at 40-30 and, after a lengthy rally, sent a forehand wide to hand Zverev the first break of the match.
