Kolkata, Sept. 15 -- A man allegedly doctored the electricity bills of his neighbour - a senior citizen - for years and duped him of Rs 18 lakh in the Narkeldanga area of north-east Kolkata, police said on Monday.
The alleged accused has been arrested after a preliminary investigation.
In one instance, even when the actual reading showed a negative balance, the electricity bill displayed an amount of Rs 8,350.
The elderly businessman could not leave his home, so he entrusted a local youth with the task of paying his electricity bills. However, the youth began creating forged electricity bills and managed to siphon off nearly Rs 18 lakh over eight years before attempting to flee.
Ultimately, Mohammad Arshad was arrested by the police.
