Kolkata, April 23 -- Under an unprecedented security cover, about 90 per cent of the 3.60 crore plus electorate expressed their democratic choice amid sporadic incidents of violence an hour from the scheduled end of polling on 152 seats in round one of the two-phase West Bengal Assembly elections on Thursday.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) said 89.93 per cent voting was recorded till 5 PM. The figure already constitutes a nearly eight per cent jump over the polling figure of 82.3 per cent registered in the 2021.

According to ECI data, South Dinajpur district recorded the highest voter turnout at 93.12 per cent, followed by Cooch Behar at 92.07 per cent.

Kalimpong district recorded the lowest at 81.98 per cent.
