Kolkata, Sept. 10 -- A proposed West Bengal law empowering the government to transfer teaching and non-teaching staff between state universities triggered a sharp political and academic backlash on Thursday, with the Opposition warning that the provision could be misused to selectively target teachers and erode university autonomy.
The West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, introduced by Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay during a special session of the Assembly, seeks to amend the 2017 Act by empowering the Chancellor, in consultation with the state government, to transfer employees "for administrative reasons".
