Kolkata, Sept. 4 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today questioned whether people who came to India before 2024 would "really be granted citizenship" under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
"Will those who came to this country by 2024 be granted citizenship?" she asked in the Assembly, before adding, "We will not allow anyone's civil rights to be taken away."Her remarks came just days after the union Home Ministry issued a gazette notification on September 1, announcing that Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians fleeingreligious persecution or fear of persecution from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan until December 31, 2024, would be granted refugee status.
