Kolkata, June 4 -- The West Bengal government has initiated the process of filling thousands of vacancies across the three tiers of village panchayas in the state, rural development minister and senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh announced on Thursday.

Ghosh chaired an administrative review meeting of the rural development department at Salt Lake in Kolkata.

He said that the department has a tremendous shortage of employees in panchayats, panchayat samitis and zilla parishads in Bengal.

According to figures released by the rural development department, there are currently 11,548 vacant posts in the gram panchayats, 630 vacancies in panchayat samitis and 65 vacancies in zilla parishads across the state.
