Khammam, July 27 -- Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday said welfare schemes are investments in people and not "freebies," asserting that the Congress government is committed to ensuring that no child attends school on an empty stomach.

Inaugurating a centralized community kitchen in Madhira Assembly constituency to provide free nutritious breakfast to government school students, Bhatti said the statewide breakfast programme, covering 2.7 million students, marks a historic step towards building a healthier and more educated generation.

He said the government is also providing milk and ragi malt to improve students' nutrition.
