Kolkata, June 4 -- A Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor who won the civic elections on a Trinamool Congress (TMC) ticket has been arrested on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation among others, police said.

Mahesh Kumar Sharma, the councillor of Ward Number 42, was arrested by a team from the Burrabazar Police Station on Wednesday.

A case had been registered against Sharma, a resident of Cotton Street in Central Kolkata's Posta, and he has been accused of extorting money from traders and real estate developers in the area.
