Kolkata, June 18 -- union Minister for Jal Shakti CR Patil on Thursday called for a large-scale expansion of rainwater harvesting infrastructure across the country.

Patil said that groundwater levels had declined in many parts of the country and emphasised the need for sustained conservation efforts to ensure that theHe urged apartment complexes, offices, industries and individual households to install rainwater harvesting systems that can capture monsoon run-off and channel it back into the ground.

According to the minister, such systems can be established at a relatively modest cost and adapted to local conditions using a range of model designs prepared by the government.
