Mumbai, Dec. 2 -- Polling began on Tuesday for the first phase of local body elections in Maharashtra, covering 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats across the state.

Voting commenced at 7.30 am and will continue until 5.30 pm, with counting scheduled for December 3. Nearly one crore voters will determine the outcome of 6,042 councillor seats and 264 municipal council president posts.

The State Election Commission has set up 12,316 polling stations and deployed 62,108 personnel to ensure smooth and peaceful voting. Officials confirmed that 17,367 EVM control units and 34,734 ballot units have been arranged for use across the state.
