Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 27 -- Kerala's Vizhinjam International Seaport has achieved a rare global milestone by handling over 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) within just 9 months of commencing commercial operations, Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan announced today.

Saying that the achievement has brought pride to the state as it celebrates Onam, the Minister said "To surpass the installed capacity within the very first year of operations is exceptional in the global maritime sector.""Vizhinjam has surprised the world by crossing 1.012 million TEUs, against the original estimate of three lakh containers for the first year under the concession agreement," he noted.
