Mumbai, May 21 -- Violence erupted for the second consecutive day at Garib Nagar in Mumbai's Bandra East on Wednesday during a court-backed anti-encroachment drive, after a mosque at the site was demolished, officials said.
Police resorted to lathi charge to disperse protesters who allegedly pelted stones as demolition teams, backed by civic and railway authorities, moved in to clear illegal structures on Western Railway land.
Eye-witnesses said tension flared soon after the mosque was brought down as part of the ongoing drive.
Residents expressed strong outrage and emotional reactions during the demolition of the mosque structure. As the drive was underway in Garib Nagar, angry residents staged protests at the site.
