Varanasi, May 26 -- Varanasi will become the country's first garbage-free city in two months.

The Varanasi Municipal Corporation is working rapidly towards this goal. In this regard, 23 out of 27 garbage dumps have been closed. The process of eliminating the remaining four is underway. On Tuesday, Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari presented his and the corporation's report card on the completion of three years of his tenure.

Mayor Tiwari stated that Varanasi, which ranked 41st in the Swachhta Survey 2023 for the past three years, has now achieved 17th place in 2025. The number of sanitation workers has been increased to 7,428 from 4,075. Cleaning is being done in three shifts at major temples and roads.
