Varanasi, June 24 -- Union Home Minister Amit Shah today urged states to increase the income of Gram Panchayats to make the country's three-tier Panchayati Raj system more effective.

Shah, also the Minister for Cooperation, chaired the 25th meeting of the Central Zonal Council in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, during the day.

Stressing the need for formulating the relevant rules for enhancing the income of the rural bodies, he said raising the income of Panchayats would make India's three-tier democratic system more effective.

The meeting was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
