Washington, July 1 -- The US has warned that several NATO members are falling behind on commitments to increase defence spending, ahead of the transatlantic alliance's summit in Ankara this week which will be attended by President Donald Trump.
Speaking to reporters before the gathering, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said many ally nations were yet to present credible plans to meet the expense targets agreed during last year's NATO summit in The Hague.
Under pressure from Washington, alliance leaders had committed to raising defence-related spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, a significant increase from previous targets.
