New Delhi/Washington, Jan. 25 -- US President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to slap Canada with a 100 per cent tariff if it went ahead with its trade deal with China.

The US President sees the trade deal between Canada and China as a way for China to route its exports to America through Canada.

"China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney had recently visited Beijing and agreed to an initial trade agreement which would reduce tariffs in Chinese electric cars sold to Canada in return for China agreeing to lower barriers for Canadian farm products.
