Kolkata, May 23 -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning along with his wife, marking the beginning of his four-day India visit.

Rubio landed at the Kolkata airport and headed straight to the Mother House in Taltala before leaving for New Delhi later in the day to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This is the first visit by a US Secretary of State to West Bengal in the last 14 years.

The last American foreign secretary to visit Kolkata was Hillary Clinton, who came to the city in May 2012.

Rubio's Kolkata visit was announced on social media by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.
