Washington, July 9 -- The United States has begun the process of removing Syria from its designation as a "state sponsor of terrorism," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday (local time), following the Trump administration's notification to Congress of its intent to rescind the designation.
The move triggers a 45-day Congressional review period and could pave the way for greater international trade and investment in Syria, the State Department said.
Rubio said removing the designation would give Syria an opportunity to rebuild and "begin a new chapter," adding that a stable and unified Syria at peace with its neighbors would benefit the wider region and the world.
