Washington, May 8 -- Authorities in the US have said that they are arranging an evacuation flight for all the five American passengers aboard the hantavirus-hit cruise ship that has now sailed to the Canary Islands amid growing international monitoring of the recent outbreak.

A spokesperson for the US State Department said Washington was working to organise a repatriation flight to safely return US citizens from the vessel once it arrives in Tenerife.

"The Department of State is arranging a repatriation flight to support the safe return of American passengers on this ship," the spokesperson said.
