Pune, Oct. 25 -- Maharashtra Congress leader Gopal Tiwari today said that the implementation of the "Cow Slaughter Prohibition Act" in India began after Independence, with Uttar Pradesh being the first state to enforce such a law in 1954-55 during the Congress government's tenure.

"Article 48 of the Indian Constitution, which forms part of the Directive Principles of State Policy, recommends that states take steps to preserve and improve cattle breeds and prohibit the slaughter of cows and calves," senior spokesperson Tiwari said while speaking at the 'Akhil Navi Peth Kala-Krida Sanskritik Mahotsav' during the Go-Poojan (cow worship) ceremony.
