Abu Dhabi/Muscat, May 19 -- Authorities in the UAE have launched a new overland logistics corridor linking the emirate of Sharjah with Oman in an effort to bypass the Iranian blockade of the vital Strait of Hormuz, which has increasingly disrupted shipping.

According to the Sharjah Customs Authority, the new route officially opened on May 14 and will move cargo by truck between Sharjah's port facilities and the port city of Sohar.

The project comes amid increasing efforts by Gulf states to reduce their reliance on the Strait of Hormuz, amid concerns of future attacks or military escalation, which continue to threaten and disrupt commercial shipping across the region.
