Manila, Nov. 4 -- Typhoon Kalmaegi battered the Philippines overnight, killing one person and affecting nearly 60,000 people in the central and southern regions, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said today.

Authorities are verifying reports of a death in the Central Visayas region. Local officials confirmed that a 52-year-old man in Bohol province died after being pinned by a fallen tree, according to Anthony Damalerio, head of the Bohol Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

A total of 75,591 people were pre-emptively evacuated as Kalmaegi brought torrential rains, flooding villages across five regions, toppling trees, and knocking down power lines.
