Barnala, July 22 -- Two alleged shooters, including a wanted gangster, were arrested after they allegedly opened fire at a police team during a naka operation near the defunct Mehal Kalan toll plaza on the Barnala-Ludhiana highway early Tuesday, police said.

The accused have been identified as Arshdeep Singh alias Arshi, a resident of Bakhtgarh in Barnala district, and Gursharan Singh, a resident of Raunta village in Moga district.

According to police, the incident took place at around 5.30 am when a joint team of the CIA staff, Mehal Kalan police and Counter Intelligence personnel had set up a bulletproof barricade following specific intelligence inputs.

The operation was led by CIA Barnala Inspector Baljit Singh.
