Washington, July 22 -- In the midst of the U.S.-Iran war that has brought fresh turmoil to the Gulf region, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce a landmark 30-year civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia that would allow the kingdom to enrich uranium on its own soil.

This shift in US policy will face close scrutiny in Congress and renewed concerns over nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

The 30-year agreement, CNN quoted a U.S. official, will allow American companies to provide technology and expertise to help develop Saudi Arabia's civilian nuclear programme. The Trump administration plans to submit the deal to Congress after it is formally announced.
