Washington, March 17 -- US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised NATO allies for refusing to back a proposed mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz, chiding their reluctance and terming it a "foolish mistake", amid a deepening transatlantic divide over its joint war with Israel against Iran.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump, in a long post made his frustration with his allies clear, noting that "most" NATO countries had made it clear they did not want to get involved in the US-led effort to protect shipping through the strait, adding he was "not surprised" and describing the alliance as a "one-way street".

"We do not need the help of anyone," he wrote, while also arguing that allies should have taken part.
