Agartala, March 21 -- The opposition Congress and CPI(M) staged a walkout from the Tripura Assembly on Friday in protest against the introduction of three bills aimed at establishing private universities in the state.
They expressed concerns over the lack of scrutiny and approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for these institutions. In the absence of the opposition, the bills were passed.
Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, questioned the credentials of the proposed universities and called for a rollback of the bills for further scrutiny.
Chaudhury also criticised the ambiguity in the initial paragraph of the bill and pointed out the absence of clear information about the sponsoring trust.
