Tridib BaparnashNew Delhi, July 31 -- Rising judoka Asmita Dey scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo after defeating Canada's Heidi Quach 2-1 in the women's 48kg final in Glasgow on Friday.
The 22-year-old World No. 48, a Khelo India athlete from Tripura, displayed tremendous composure to recover from a point down and produce a memorable comeback to clinch India's first-ever Commonwealth Games title in the sport.
The final began as a cagey affair, with both judokas battling for control and repeatedly forcing each other towards the edge of the mat. Quach drew first blood midway through the contestwith a well-executed throw to take a 1-0 lead.
